A pitch I wrote to a media outlet to write an article for them: The media is spending a lot of time discussing mental illness. However, the perspective is almost entirely from the viewpoint of family members and other people without mental illness, not from the perspective of people living with the disorder. I have bipolar and anxiety disorders and am an activist, writer, and blogger. My life’s work is to tell the entire story, not just the stereotypes. If society wants to know what it is like to live with mental illness, the sensible thing to do is ask someone living with mental illness. We are more than just a problem to be dealt with, more than a burden to our families, and more than a political issue. We are people. We are community members. The current narrative is to talk about the mentally ill at their worst, but this is an incomplete picture. Let’s hear about mental illness from someone with mental illness.
