A poem partially about a summer trip home to Amarillo. ODE TO THE SUMMER OF MY FIFTY FIFTH YEAR A very special summer has come to an end. This year it feels like the death of a friend. It has left me with memories, both joyous and sad. Ive relished in the good and grown through the bad. Ive celebrated the adoption of a beautiful child, a blond, blue eyed angel, free spirited and wild. Visited my home town, my parents resting place, and the hood that will always be my home base. A road trip to meet family that I didnt know before has enriched by life and changed my spirit at its core. A lovely beach vacation, workin on my tan, to celebrate with family, a very successful man. Lost a beloved father figure and a faithful canine friend. Heres to Fred and Abby, until we meet again. A marriage for a nephew, new baby for a niece, and a literary awakening that has brought me inner peace. So ends the summer of my fifty fifth year. Fall starts today, what it brings is not clear. But my dog is resting at my feet, in my lap a purring cat. I have a summer full of memories, I can live with that.
