A proud Mom ~ sharing his beautiful thoughts and reflections ~ A year in retrospect. Today we celebrate the birth of Alexander Raspe II at a fabulous pool party…I hear there will be a taco truck! This makes Chance very happy. One year ago the child was born during our Relay for Life, to our team captain, Sharifa Raspe and her husband Alex. We are celebrating today for many other reasons as well. You see, after last year’s Relay a team of 50+ amazing people called SONO Studios + Artists made a miracle happen. We collectively gave birth to a fundraising phenomenon called Semi Divita & Fight Like a Girl. I am beaming with pride to announce that this group of like minded artists and creative types, when banning together, raised over $3,000 for the American Cancer Society in one evening. That one evening puts us in Third Place of all 21 teams currently participating in the Pomona Relay for Life (Which is coming to a close this morning, probably at the same time I finish this post). Semi Divita featured a one of a kind fashion show called Fight Like a Girl. The attached video is what played live that evening. The moments following each interview from a cancer survivor are when a model walked our runway in a dress created specifically to tell the survivor’s story. I am posting this video again because we are finalizing the documentary’s imdb page and researching the possibilities of bringing this to film festivals. The only requirements for being in the video were; to be a woman and to have fought/or to be presently fighting cancer. I am deeply saddened to say one of my female fighters lost her battle to cancer Thursday evening. Debbie was like mother to me in many ways. She picked her daughter, Lisa and me up from school everyday from the sixth grade until we could drive ourselves. I say this because middle school was by far the most tormented and troubled time in my life. After a daily dose of bullying and name calling the one thing I looked forward to was Debbie waiting in the car out front. I loved her so much. She always would make me smile and laugh after the worst day, and every Friday…she took us to get ice cream! When I found out she had passed, it was Friday…I went to get ice cream. Please, when you watch this…if you watch this. Listen carefully, these women’s words have changed my life and I will forever be grateful for it. Thank you everyone for taking arms with me in this fight. Semi Divita will happen again, I promise this. I will be in touch when the time is right.
