A question to the theists: Everybody knows that the gods of ancient Greek mythology are mythical. Poseidon, Zeus, Apollo, Hermes, Aphrodite, Athena, Hades, Helios, etc. Theyre essentially the same phenomenon as the religious phenomena of the modern variety. They each had many thousands of devotees in their day with many shrines and offerings made up to them. Indeed, their existence in the minds of men predates that of the many Christs and Jesus the Nazarean in particular. Why then, is it so harsh and offensive a prospect to suggest that the Christian mythology has no more truth to it than any other? It is but a pebble on the mound of myth which humanity has concocted through the ages. Why does it invoke such emotion and consternation? Wherefore this dependency on such an age old story? Surely we can appreciate it as we now appreciate the tale of Hercules and Prometheus without investing so much life and energy to the point where those who truly cannot distinguish it from any other myth are thought of as cold and broken, if not strident and shrill? I cannot see that religion will continue to survive in its current form. In centuries to come, we will look back on the Christ story as we do now all the dead gods. Thoughts?
