A quick note to my friends and family who have given me so much encouragement and support over the last 12 days or so. For those friends who have not ‘been in the loop’ apologies, but to now put you in the picture: A week last Thursday between noon and 13.30 I fell ill. It seems it may have been some kind of virus, but as yet the actual cause is to be determined. Whatever the cause, the result was inflammation of the fluid around my spinal cord which extended up to the base of my brain. Within the space of 90 minutes I became completely paralysed from my sternum downwards. My GP immediately admitted me to Carcassonne A&E; following which I was packed off to, and spent a couple of days in, the Intensive Care Unit at Toulouse (Purpan) hospital. Subsequently I became, and currently remain, a resident in the Neurovascular Department at Purpan. I am completely dependent on the wonderful nurses and care workers here for my everyday ‘needs’; and their gentleness and compassion, combined with their efficiency, has certainly restored my faith in the human race!! All of the most likely/common causes of the paralysis have been eliminated and more at present more in depth tests are being undertaken on the spinal fluid and blood samples taken at the end of last week. The waiting is tedious, and may last for another 10 days or so. The strength and love of my wife Doriane inspires me.
