New on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending August 19, 1978: #84 Bruce Springsteen - Badlands Badlands was the lead-off track and second single from the fourth Springteen album Darkness on the Edge of Town. Though falling just short of the Top 40 (reaching #42 the last two weeks of September 1978), the song did enjoy significant pop radio airplay in certain regions of the country (particularly in the northeast) and it was a heavy airplay favorite on the AOR format. Rolling Stone ranks the song as the second best Springsteen song behind the classic Born to Run.
