A quick trip to Alabama, but found an interesting site to photograph! This is the old bridge structure built over Elkahatchee Creek in 1931. While most bridges are made with steel or concrete beams or, if its a culvert, its just concrete (according to Eric English, Bridge Operations Engineer for the AL Dept of Transportation). This particular bridge is an arch formation with dirt in it, and its paved over the top. According to English, a high level of craftmanship was needed to create the arched bridge. It originally was destined for demolition when a new bridge was constructed next to it, but last minute pleadings let it remain standing. (Information was paraphrased and/or found in the Sept 2014 article in LAKE magazine.)
