A rare and excellent photo of the old Jaffa city walls. One - TopicsExpress

A rare and excellent photo of the old Jaffa city walls. One clearly sees the inner gatehouse on the right, parts of which are still standing. The city wall was demolished at the end of the 19th century and Ajami street (todays Yeffet) was laid out approximately following its course. The photo was taken in 1864 by the French photographer and later naval admiral Louis Vignes (1831-1896), who as a young lieutenant accompanied the famous numismatist Duke de Luynes on a scientific expedition of the Middle East, and recorded the experience. Photo taken from the wonderfully informative Tel Aviv 100 - The Municipal Encyclopedia website, where the architect and historian Shmuel Giller has just published an article (in Hebrew) about the house of the British Consul Assad Jacob Kayat, which dominated Old Jaffa in mid 19th century, as seen on the image. About half the original house still stands there today, awaiting a long overdue restoration. https://sites.google/a/tlv100.net/tlv100/yafo/kayat
