When I emailed Roger Scruton about subjectivity/relativism: My advice: we have to live together in communities. We therefore need to work towards consensus about important things. In the world of objects nothing is more important than appearances, since we find ourselves reflected in them - they are made in our own image and we in theirs. So if it goes wrong we are hurt, and we dont fit to things as we should or they to us. That is why beauty matters, and it means that we are always working towards a shared opinion in the matter: why else do we argue about it, read critics, try new things out? Show them a picture of downtown Detroit, and then one of Venice. What will be left of their relativism then? RS
