A recent study reports, Borrelia #miyamotoi, the organism causing relapsing fever, can be transmitted through blood transfusions in a mice model and suggest that this also may occur in humans. #Babesiosis, a malaria-like infection, can also be transmitted through the blood supply. Researchers from #YaleUniversity have reported evidence of miyamotoi infection in about 4% of healthy people living in southern New England (about 10% have evidence of a previous Lyme disease infection). Borrelia miyamotoi was detected in ticks in 2001 in Connecticut, but has been the focus of several research studies more recently.
