A recurring objection I hear concerning single payer it that In those Countries people pay more taxes to finance their free health care. Yes, it is true, because money to finance health care must come from some source. If it does not come from the employer, like here in the US, it must come directly from the users, the taxpayers. However, in these last 10 years, the contribution that the US employees have to pay to their employers (co-insurance) in order for them to pay in full the increasing premiums, has grown to a substantial amount. For a family the co-insurance is now $4.500 a year. On top of that the employees will have to pay out-of-pocket the cost of deductibles and co-pays. Another $1,000 a year on average. Basically, Canadians pay in taxes the same amount that the employers plus the employees are paying for the insurance in the US, with the advantage that they do not have to pay the deductibles and co-pays. And they receive more money in their paycheck because employers do not have to pay for their insurance. In conclusion, would it be better to pay the insurance as a tax, and do not have to worry for deductibles and co-pays?
