A reply by Prof Price of UCT(sunday times pg18) to last weeks article by professsor Xolela Mangcu about lack of transformation in demographic representation in the acdemia confirms my unresearched assertion that, academia as a site of struggle, has largely been overlooked at the expense of other apparent lofty sites of struggle such as state and business. Prof Price alludes that lack of blacks at professorship level is not a function of lack of appetite to appoint them, rather concerning limited pool; only 28 african women professors in the country. Knowing that oneday it would be a Government, it conciously sent many cadres to school whilst in exile and I know many were also sent to school immediately after 1994. Perhaps it is about time that scope of Deployment goes beyond business, parliament and administration, but actively selecting, supporting young progressive post graduates into furthering their studies to highest levels. Lets cultivate the same appetite people have for deployment in the academia.....thinking aloud!!
