A repost from The Smart Witch Circle Spell Basics: Simple Protection Spell The simplest protection spell is to cast a circle around yourself. It is not necessary for there to be a visible circle. The spiritual boundaries will be recognized by spiritual forces. Stand within while demarcating the circle, rather than casting from outside intending to jump inside when the circle is complete. Sit in the center, calming your mind through meditation, if you choose, until you feel it is safe to come out. Visible circles are not necessarily more effective than ones that have been demarcated with a finger or a tool, however, their clear boundaries may provide you with additional peace of mind. Further, there may be an added element of security, as you are less likely to accidentally venture outside the perimeter if it is visible. Regardless of the material used to cast a circle, it is absolutely crucial that the circle be unbroken until you release the quarters and open the circle at the end of your ritual. Powerful materials (from different magical traditions) that can be used to create a visible circle include: amber chunks or beads, chalk, charcoal, coral, cornmeal, flour, jet, lava, red brick dust or red ochre, rice flour, rum, salt, turquoise, vervain, vermilion and whiskey. Certain circle-casting materials, when combined, are said to create a synergistic, exponentially increased magical effect. A circle cast of alternating coral and jet is one powerful combination. For extra fortification and maximum power, you can create double concentric circles – one circle within the other. Fill the narrow boarder between the two circles with protective amulets or salt.
