A retirement reception was held at the Fort Belvoir Officers Club Nov. 14, 2014, for Brig. Gen. William Phillips, the 29th Infantry Division Assistant Division Commander- Virginia. Maj. Gen. Charles W. Whittington, Jr., the 29th Infantry Division Commanding General, awarded Phillips the Legion of Merit. Phillips’ wife Renee was also honored for her dedication and commitment to the military. Phillips served in the U.S. Army for nearly 40 years and prior to his position with the 29th ID, Phillips served as the Virginia Army National Guard Land Component Commander and, prior to that, he commanded the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
