A short summary of Ian Barbour’s Religion and Science: - TopicsExpress

A short summary of Ian Barbour’s Religion and Science: Historical and Contemporary Issues Historically the world has been conceived as “A Created Hierarchy,” “Particles in Motion,” and “A Law-Abiding Machine.” Eventually, studying the natural world was another method to learn about God, resulting in the design argument. Evolution undermined the design argument; then an influential argument for God’s existence. Four methods to relate religion and science are: conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration. Integrating long-lasting and successful scientific theories with religion is the preferable method. Religion and science have similarities, including data agreement, coherence, adequate scope, and providing a framework. One difference is that religion is a way of life, not just a way of obtaining knowledge. Three examples from contemporary science, particle physics, astronomy, and evolution, are integrated with Christian beliefs using process theology. Process theology is preferred since it provides a single framework to represent God’s action as both Creator and Redeemer.
