A slow walkthrough an old school building, I found goat excrements scattered along the school alley, a wrecked and worn out building with only two to three teachers sitting in languish in a gloomy teacher’s room, class rooms with no doors, decorated with rotten bookless shelves filled with nothing but layers of dust with tiny hand prints here and there. A spider weaved its web from the ceiling to the top of the wall. At first glance, you could say it was an abandoned old school. But you saw some children inevitably curious about your presence and first observed you behind the windows before following your walk as if you were the Pied Piper of Hamelin. You could hear them giggling. They looked dirty but their smiles just like any other kids on Earth seeing a stranger, a sheepish smile. That, more or less, was the welcoming scene for me after half an hour walking uphill to visit the school where I was going to teach for the next two months in a remote island of Kei. - Tami.
