A soldier died in combat today.... The next time a headline reads like this.....think of how that soldier, sailor, airman or Marine died. He died in service to his country. He likely died of severe trauma caused by high explosives; the kind that will dismember a body in the blink of an eye. Maybe he was burned and couldnt escape his vehicle. Might have been shot and bled to death. He might have died in a horrific aviation accident. My point: That serviceman died defending you, and you, and you, and all of us. His mother and father were not on the battlefield with him when he died. Its likely he died alone. How sad. The only comfort he had at that moment is that his pain would end when he died. He had his God to pray to. And maybe a fellow warrior was trying to comfort him before he drew his final breath and his eyes became lifeless. I remember him. I honor him. I greave for his family and those that carry the horrible memories as they saw him go lifeless. The next time some old crippled veteran marches by me carrying our flag...Im going to pause and remember what that symbol of our freedom means. I will remember the fallen. I will honor them. I will not forget what their sacrifice has done for me. For Gods sake! Please make a renewed effort with me to respect the sacrifice of those who have died in the service of this nation.
