Jail Diversion is a formal, cooperative approach between police officers and mental health professionals that focuses on creating alternatives to arrest, booking, and jail detention for people whose minor criminal behavior is directly due to mental health conditions. The primary goal of this program is to divert people from arrest and into community-based treatment and support services. This program has expanded over the past few years to include homelessness prevention services, behavioral health programs for the elderly and assistance with hoarding behaviors.
