A startling statistic from MWK. In 1972, the U.S. had a total prison population of 300,000. Currently, it is 2.3 million. As a fraction of total population, it breaks down as follows: in 1972, 1 in 700 people in this country were incarcerated; in 2014, it is up to 1 in 139. Allowing for the fact that reliable numbers are not available for North Korea, we have just about the highest incarceration rate in the world. We trail only Seychelles.
