John Keats INTERPRETATIONS While it is a fact universally acknowledged that anything beautiful in this temporal world does not last long - be it a beautiful flower or spring or miss universe - God does not grant permanence to the beauty. As I type this sitting 28 degrees or so above the equator and look around me I see nothing that will last forever .Todays beautiful woman will become tomorrows ugly hoary hag. This beautiful flower in front of me will be withered beyond recognition tomorrow . This house, however majestic will soon be eroded by wind and rain. So where is that beauty that will last forever? If a thing of beauty is to last forever then it should never change or alter; it should neither increase nor should it ever diminish in its appeal, but here the poet asserts this is not as a matter of fact but that of hope, as if in form of a wish made by him to be approved and granted in the earnest. It is with the same earnestness that a modern song writer wrote that you will always remain beautiful to me. The ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever,’ however, on its own, is also a matter of fact, as why should something beautiful ever cease to be a source of joyous happiness in the eyes of a beholder? Keats found that a beauty (beautiful thing) is a source of perennial joy and happiness. It leaves an indelible mark on our mind and provides us with eternal happiness whenever we think about it. our joy increases as we keep on remembering the beauty. it is just like Endymion looking for Cythisa as his everlasting love. When we proceed further we find peace in the fact that truth is beauty and beauty is God. In other words : Satyam, Shivam , Sundaram . And when we meditate on it , it is this thing of beauty that flash upon that inward eye , and becomes a companion and a bliss of solitude forever - thus a thing of beauty is a Joy forever.
