A unique concert at Boston Symphony this Sunday, at 2PM! Everybody - TopicsExpress

A unique concert at Boston Symphony this Sunday, at 2PM! Everybody who loves great music-making will be able to hear Natalia Gutman, a virtuoso cellist and a great artist - perhaps the last link with the golden age of Soviet musicians (she had a trio with Sviatoslav Richter; and was a close friend and colleague of Rostropovich). This is what Ben Zander, Boston Philharmonic Orchestras conductor, wrote to the young musicians of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra: Dear BPYO, The arrival of Natalia Gutman this week is going to be one of the most exciting events in our musical lives. You will be telling your grand children that when you were young you played the Dvorak concerto with one of the greatest musicians the world has ever heard. I promise you will never forget this experience, from the very first moment when, in the rehearsal on Friday, she puts her bow on the string for the first electrifying B natural in the Dvorak, until the final note of her last encore on Sunday afternoon. Now, WE have to make ourselves ready for the awe-inspiring privilege of playing with this great artist. I am so excited that I spend all my waking moments with the score of the Dvorak, poring over every detail of a piece that I have known for most of my life. Please do the same. You will rarely in your lives meet somebody with such authority and such overwhelming musical conviction. Her power, her rhythm, and the sense of the inevitable musical journey that this piece presents, are a miracle. There is no cellist about whom I am so excited as Natalia. Please take the task of preparing for the rehearsal on Friday as one of the most serious you have ever undertaken, so that she will feel that the great effort of flying all the way from Moscow to play with us, is a joy for her too. You will not see Natalia smiling much, until the very end of the performance. Even then, it is clear that her only thought is with the music - she has no social frills. She even appears quite dour. But be sure, she is hearing every single note that you will be playing and she will be demanding total commitment from everybody. If you play beautifully she will exude a great warmth that will envelop us all, so please take every possible step to ensure that our playing is worthy of this partnership. I cannot wait to share this great human being with you and for us to create together an experience which everyone will treasure for the rest of their lives. Much love Ben Zander bostonphil.org/concerts/november-0
