‘A very busy year’: Oil patch hiring activity expected to rise in 2014 Yadullah Hussain, Financial Post · Jan. 6, 2014 | Last Updated: Jan. 6, 2014 1:30 PM ET Canadian oil and gas companies are gearing up to recruit actively this year after hiring in the sector fell below expectations in 2013. “It wasn’t a bad or negative year, but it didn’t happen as people expected it to happen,” said Jim Fearon, vice-president Western Canada at Hays. “We think 2014 is positioned to be a very busy year — you will see a bit of catch up from the lag of last year.” The RBC’s Mr. Hughes said the larger direct economic effect of LNG construction is likely to begin in 2015, but “we expect that preparatory work and the boost to confidence in the province from these projects going ahead will help spur job creation, and lift business and household spending in 2014.”
