A very nice write up by Joe Muccia: In remembrance of the 30 Dec 1998 passing of Eugene “Doc” Roe. We’ve discussed Roe frequently on this page and with good reason. His persona, uniquely captured by Shane Taylor, thrust the quiet medic from Louisiana, into the public conscience, and since then, we have all benefited from hearing about Roe from the other surviving members of Easy. As we finish out the year, it’s easy to recall some of the things that have been said about Roe’s performance during the Battle of the Bulge. “Quiet”, “Reliable”, “Efficient”, “Brave”, “Smart”, “Caring”…everyone of these words was used at one time or another by a member of Easy when speaking with me about Roe. He had nothing but his aid bag and guts. While the others could shield themselves when the rounds really started flying, Roe’s job carried him into the teeth of the enemy fire…and he never faltered. The others could take some control over the action by engaging the enemy with their rifles; Roe was afforded no such control. The only thing he had tenuous control over was life and death…and his own fear. And more often than not he conquered the former and at least held the latter at bay. One thing is sure, out of all the Easy men I spoke with, each of them spoke in almost revered tones when speaking of Roe. So take a moment, as we close out this year, and remember Doc Roe. Currahee!
