A young gentile woman on FB has numerous Jewish friends. She shares Shabbat dinner and other family rituals with them, and loves Jewish camaraderie, thought, and culture. Her issue is that she wants to convert to Judaism, but become a secular,” not “religious” Jew. This is how I responded to her -- “Whats all the ruckus about conversion? “No one can preclude you from doing the mitzvot of your choice just because you werent born Jewish. And it certainly isnt about ensuring a place in heaven. The Talmud cleared that bugger up a long time ago. “”There are even Jews whom I have converted to classical Judaism. But, they have ultimately chosen their own Jewish paths, even secular (although I prefer the descriptor ethical-cultural). I may not agree. But, it is an exercise of Judaisms greatest gift, free will. It must be honored, not criticized. “I would be delighted if a bazillion born-Jews ascended to the level of being ethical-cultural, instead of indifferently remaining Jews for nothing or even self-hating. “As far as you are concerned, who is there to care? You can still go to synagogue or Judaic classes any time you wish. And your real friends will doubtlessly stand by you. “Just live the life, period.” AGREE OR DISAGREE?
