ABOUT Jeet Kune Do Jeet Kune Do literally translated is ‘The Way of the Intercepting Fist.” It is an art of self-expression. There are over 26 arts that were research by Bruce Lee in the development of JKD. He wanted to create an art that was limitless, functional and combative for the street. In doing so, he wanted to make sure his ‘style’ was complete in all ranges of combat from kicking through to grappling range. Some of the arts he researched in his Jun Fan system were Wing Chun, Muay Thai, Boxe-Française Savate, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, Chin Na, Jiu-Jitsu, and Western Boxing. This was his JKD. Later added were arts such as the Filipino Martial Arts (Kali, Arnis, Eskrima, and Dumog), as well as Shoot Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. What Bruce Lee gave us with his research is an art that teaches you the ability to flow seamlessly from one range of combat to the next. The key in JKD training is to develop your own personal style through the base art of Jun Fan using Jeet Kune Do concepts. These training methods and techniques are in a league of their own. The primary focus in JKD is to develop your attributes or natural abilities in order to be proficient with your technique. Learning to become faster, react quicker, stronger and become more agile, as well as learning fighting strategies that will keep you one step ahead of your opponent – this is what JKD is all about. How is JKD different than MMA? JKD is combative mixed martial arts for the street. It’s self-preservation as opposed to self-perfection. JKD is bound by no rules and therefore is limitless. Many of the MMA techniques used today were part of martial arts and were practiced by JKD long before any UFC or mixed martial art event. It’s a reality check. Training for the street is different than training for the ring. MMA has a great deal to offer, but is limited as a sport. Bruce Lee’s original teachings, training and fighting methods are a part of JKD concepts. However, we do not limit ourselves to these for our own personal growth and expression. JKD was continuing to grow during Bruce’s life, and, after his untimely death, it continued to grow through his instructors. This is what Bruce Lee propagated through his teachings: Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add specifically what is your own. Walk on my friends… JKD is taught to the elite U.S. Navy SEALS, special Marines units and law enforcement organizations worldwide. It is slowly becoming popular across the UK. There are currently only a handful of sanctioned JKD schools in England.
