ABOUT THE VOTE FOR SECESSION IN CRIMEA-- On February 27 during the 2014 Crimean crisis an emergency session was held by the newly-assembled Crimean legislature (not the group that was elected in 2010). A motion was passed with 55 of 64 votes that elected Sergei Aksyonov Prime Minister. Since 2010 he was a deputy of the Supreme Council of Crimea, elected as a member of Russian Unity, which had 5% of votes (warranting 3 seats of total 100 in Crimean parliament) during those elections into Supreme Council of Crimea. So, lets see... The country is occupied by Russian-speaking armed soldiers and paramilitary personnel; ethnic Ukranian and Tartar media have been shut down or replaced by Russian media, and the Ukranian government has been frozen out of the country. The referendum on Crimean joining the Russian federation is written by a group which got 5% of the popular vote in 2010. The vote on the referendum is called in early March and will be held March 16, with the Russian government pledging to honor the results of the election, and virtually no free and open debate will be held in Crimea prior to the election. 20,000+ armed pro-Russian forces are patrolling the streets of Crimea. Why would I be worried about the fairness of these proceedings? Even though its obviously in the greater Ukraines interest to not lose Crimea, what disinterested party could argue this is a referendum conducted in an impartial fashion?
