ABSS Hits Highest 4-Year Graduation Rate Alamance-Burlington Schools earned its highest graduation rate on record with a district rate of 78.1% of seniors graduating with their 4-year cohort in the 2012-2013 school year. Capping off five years of steadily-increasing performance, the district’s 7 high schools have increased the number of graduates a robust 7.5% since 2009. From 2009-2013, every Alamance-Burlington traditional high school experienced a marked increase in the percentage of seniors earning their diplomas, including: Southern 4.7% Western 6.2% Eastern 6.9% Williams 8.4% Cummings 9.0% Graham 14.1% With a strong double-digit gain over the last 5 years of 14.1%, Graham High Principal Charlotte Holmes commented on her school’s progress: “We are pleased with our gains but know that we still have more work to do to meet our goals for every student graduating on time. Our staff is committed to doing whatever it takes. We utilize a variety of strategies and look at each student individually in order to ensure that everyone stays on track to become a Graham High graduate.” In addition, graduation rate gaps between all demographic groups in Alamance-Burlington high schools continue to narrow with the strongest gains coming for students in the Hispanic, African-American, and Male categories. Hispanic students have closed the gap with other students by 3.5%; African-Americans by 2.9%; and Male students have narrowed the gap with Female students by nearly 5%. “Over the past 2 years, meeting the needs of our students and helping to create individual plans for every child’s academic success has been a priority for our district, and we are seeing the results of our efforts,” said Superintendent, Dr. Lillie Cox. “Thanks to the leadership strengths of our classroom teachers, and our strong administrative leadership at the school and district level, the strategies that we have put in place at all grades K-12 are paying off.” The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released official results for 2012-2013 graduation rates for all school districts across the state on Thursday, August 8, 2013.
