ACCORD GUBER CANDIDATE LAUDS NASS ON CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS. The gubernatorial candidate of Accord in Ekiti State, Barrister Kole Ajayi has commended the National Assembly on the various items highlighted in the recent constitutional amendments saying that he is now convinced that the future of democracy and good governance is bright for this country. Speaking through a press release personally signed and made available to the media in Ado-Ekiti the state capital, Ajayi stated that of very important note are; the total Autonomy of the Local Governments, Independent candidate for elections and the demergence of the office of Attorney General from that of Commissioner for Justice. Ajayi opined that with full autonomy for local governments, the downtrodden grassroot will have a direct feel of governance and basic amenities of lives, hence, the rural-urban shift will be deemphasised. On the issue of independent candidature, Ajayi revealed that if eventually passed into law, it will be the beginning of political revolution in the country because according to him, what we have now is restriction of choices of the people with the gargantuan financial impediment imposed on aspirants during primaries which has been a major problem for the emergence of credible but not rich candidates, adding that people have been choosing between two devils, saying that with emergence of independent candidate, the choice of the masses will be wider while strong willed candidates will be coming up stage. Speaking on the position of Attorney General, Ajayi opined that the amendment should go further to make it independent and not political and it should not be tied to the apron strings of the executive. The legal practitioner further stated that the attorney general is to ensure that the laws of the land are strictly enforced, criminals are prosecuted and brought to book in good tune. The gubernatorial candidate expressed the hope that the constitutional amendment should be regularly carried out until we get to our democratically stable destination, suggesting that other issues that should be reviewed in future are; Making the legislature part time, reducing the powers of federal government and making political executive positions less attractive.
