ADAPT Fit Tip by Dr. Scott Fuller Flexibility versus Range of Motion When people first start stretching they believe they are lengthening muscles and rarely take into account the impact they are having on their connective tissue. There is a difference between BEING FLEXIBLE and having great RANGE OF MOTION. True range of motion is the ability of antagonistic muscle groups to activate or relax with one another and allow for that range to occur (muscle function). In contrast, flexibility is the ability of connective tissue to lengthen. In class you may see someone performing a move with great flexibility, but the ability of the muscles to control the motion might not be adequate. When this occurs, it can put a person at risk for injury because they do not have the ability to support their body in certain positions. So, when performing movements in class, think about whether you are truly using muscular function to create range, or if you are just lengthening connective tissue.
