**ADO BAYARO’s 50th YEARs AS EMIR OF KANO** His Royal Highness Alhaji Ado Abdullahi Bayero is the 13th Fulani Emir of Kano and the 56th ruler of Kano. He ascended the throne in October 1963 and is one of the longest serving emirs in the Emirate’s history. During his tenure, the emirate has been transformed from a powerful native authority into a custodian of Hausa Language and Islamic traditions. The Kano Palace plays host to official courtesy visits by many government personnel and foreigners. Efforts to curtail the influence of the Emir and the Emirate in early 1980s were unsuccessful. The Emir continued to reign unperturbed and dedicated himself to the good service of his people and Emirate. He had maintained excellent cordial relationship with all Emirs, Obas and Obis throughout the country. Ado Bayero’s diligent and quality leadership to his Council and the people of Kano is his passion and the key to his success and institutionalization of Kano Emirate. Ado Bayero by his actions and pronouncements is the Emir of all the people indigenous and non-indigenous alike; he does not discriminate because of creed, ethnicity or nationality. Alhaji Ado Bayero is undoubtedly one of the most pre-eminent personalities in contemporary Nigerian history. Ado Bayero is an exceptional Emir in the history of Emirates in Northern Region of Nigeria because he had witnessed several changes brought about by the various administrations that governed Kano from the time it was a Province to its current status of a State. Ado Bayero held in a very dignifying manner with esteem, prestige and decorum the Emirate system established by his ancestors and uplifted it to a veritable institution that is revered by all and sundry. He is the people’s Emir because of his deep-seated love and sense of justice, fairness and equity in all his dealings with his people and council. He is a very disciplined and highly cultured and unassuming person with an exceptional capacity to embrace changes patiently but without compromising the status of the institution he represents. In present day Emirate system none is so well placed and adored than His Highness the Emir of Kano, the Kano Emirate, under the reign of Takawa, is the pacesetter, the first among equals and the cynosure of all eyes. The influence of the Emir and the Kano Emirate is well known and documented in several scholarly works and by all admirers of African Culture and Tradition. Indeed Kano Emirate and Ado Bayero are so synonymous and synchronous so much so that it is impossible for a person to separate them. When you speak of Kano the first thing that comes to mind is Alhaji Ado Bayero the simple, friendly, elegant, courageous and undaunted Emir who has a great sense of humor and has shown immense character and valor even in the face of adversity and challenges. During the fifty year reign of Ado Bayero, Kano has recorded tremendous developments in all spheres socially and economically and particularly in the sectors of provision of education, health, infrastructure, trade and commerce to mention just a few. Due to his upbringing, education and preoccupation, Alhaji Ado Bayero is a broad minded detrimental Nigerian well before he ascended the throne some fifty years ago. During the fifty year reign of Ado Bayero, a cocktail of several administrations came and went, some were provocative while others were understanding, friendly and supportive but all left the Emir and the Emirate fixed, unblemished and untainted waxing from strength to strength. The history of Northern Region of Nigeria and in particular that of Kano will be incomplete without making special mention of the effects of the giant strides recorded by Ado Bayero, the Emir of Kano, that brought about peace, unity, development and progress to the North and Kano in particular. The influence of the Emir and the pomp and pageantry of the Emirate under his reign is far beyond Kano or the North but transcends the whole country and beyond. As former law enforcement agent and a diplomat the Emir had over the years built a veritable and reliable network of contacts nationally and globally. It is this outreach that made the Emir indomitable and relevant. Diplomats, businesspersons in the fields of trade and commerce, banking, finance and actuary, public office holders, and religious leaders rally round the Emir for value addition, recognition, guide and acknowledgement for the enhancement of their various preoccupations and for the good of Kano and the people of the Emirate. Above all else the Emir had managed to remain neutral and took an apolitical posture refusing to be a partisan. Ado Bayero had helped in no small manner in stabilizing his Emirate and in accepting to work in harmony with the government both military and civilian. The Emir had worked tirelessly in a very unobtrusive but firm and brotherly manner with our administration and had rendered useful counseling on several matters of national interest in a selfless respectable manner. WE remain grateful to His Highness for all the support and encouragement he gave me during the eight years of our administration. As he marks the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of his ascension to the throne.on behalf of the entire membars of ZAUREN MURYAR TALAKAWAN AREWA wishes to congratulate him and to wish him good health and many years of relentless service to our people and humanity. WE pray for His Royal Highness, Alhaji Ado Bayero, CFR, LLD, JP the Emir of Kano to have a much longer reign and for the guidance, protection and blessings of Allah Azza wa Jallah. Ameen.
