AES Member Meeting Elie’s Family Restaurant (4102 Monona Dr., Madison) 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM, Saturday, March 15, 2014 Donna Stehling, AES Storyteller 30 Years of Protecting and Mapping Wisconsin’s Unique Ancient Heritage Join us on Saturday, March 15 as pioneering AES member Donna Stehling shares stories about the early days of the Ancient Earthworks Society. Storytelling has always been used by groups of people to transmit, from one generation to the next, some of the lessons learned, triumphs achieved and setbacks endured and Donna is a masterful teller of such tales. You will hear stories about the extensive effort to map one group of mounds, (the Cranberry Creek site), the fight for burial site protection legislation in response to plans to build over another mound (the Reindahl Mound, near our AES meeting place on the shores of Lake Monona), adventures in the snow at Aztalan verifying Winter Solstice, and more. And, of course, you will hear about glaciers, marker trees, decks of cards (youll have to come on Saturday to learn what this has to do with the mounds), fascinating people and sundry insights into Wisconsin’s amazing past you wont hear anyplace else. An optional (but very good) lunch will follow, along with some lively discussion. Future AES member meeting speakers include Archaeologist Tom Pleger on April 19 and Geologist David Mickelson on May 17.
