AKPABIOISM LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE: I was at the Abuja Sheraton Hotel & Towers awhile ago to take care of some personal business. As I was driving to the car park, I saw a banner in front of the Ladi Kwali Conference Hall, with the header: AKPABIOISM LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE, Abuja 2014. I made a mental note to check out what the essence behind the AKPABIOISM chicanery before heading up for the business that brought me here. A brief summary of what I found out about the AKPABIOISM leadership conference, Abuja 2014 shall suffice: The conference was the brain child of AKPABIO CENTRE FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT and the Chancellor of the centre is Pastor Bassey James. The conference drew participants from a cross section of youth from Akwa Ibom state resident within Abuja and beyond. Quite a number of serving Youth Corpers and undergraduates were in attendance. The aim of the conference was to equip the youth with leadership ideals of Governor Godswill Akpabio, the Uncommon Transformer. The faculty include: 1) Comrade Abba Moro, the Minister of Interior 2) Prof Rufai Ahmed Alkali, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs 3) Professor Bola A.A. Akinterinwa, DG Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, 4) Professor Akin-Ibidapo-Obe, Dean Faculty of Law, UNILAG 5) Professor Micheal Adikwu, Vice Chancellor University of Abuja 6) Conrade Jude Omagwe, Special Assistant to the President on Youth and Students Matters 7) Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien, Father of the Day 8) Pastor Bassey James, Chancellor Akpabio Centre for Leadership Development By any standard this is a very rich faculty but it turns out that ONLY Jude Omagwe, the SA to the President on Youth and Student Matters was present, all other listed Faculties were conspicuously absent and I cannot categorically say why. Moving on, I found out that the event was a pseudo-political jamboree to drum up support for the incoming Governor and successor to Governor Akpabio. Outside the hall were Atilogu dancers and an Eyo like masquerade and other entertainers to add spice to the event. Banners of the anointed successor to governor Akpabio occupied strategist locations within the arena. Women groups and market women held his banners and were moving round with it. From my vantage point, I caught two sentences from the Speaker on the podium before I took my leave. I heard him with my two ears saying, all the local government in Akwa Ibom state has been fitted with computers and interconnected via the internet. He said Emmanuel Udom will sustain the uncommon transformation of Governor Akpabio. I was like, what the F**k? This is supposed to be a conference to discuss on strategy, impact, enterprise, legacy and what have you and how the youth can key into these vision as the next generation of leaders. But then leadership in this clime is all about building and construction, from roads, stadia, government houses and any wasteful project of uncommon transformation that catches the Leaders fancy. Thats it! Got to run......
