ALBUQUERQUE COPWATCH MAINTAINS PRINCIPLES OF NON VIOLENCE WHILE OBSERVING THE POLICE AND ASSERTING THE RIGHTS OF THE DETAINED PERSON(S). OUR GOALS ARE TO 1) Reduce police violence. 2) Keep police accountable. 3) Empower and unite the community to resist police abuse. 3) Empower people to solve problems WITHOUT police intervention. 5) To be in a direct Democracy form with the community. We will accomplish this by... 1)Directly observing the police on the street. 2)Documenting incidents and making that information available to the victims. 3)Educating the public on the issues of racist, racial and classist profiling of citizens. 4)Educating the public about police conduct in the community and issues related to the role of police in our society. 5)Providing support to victims whenever possible. 6)Sharing information with the community, conducting Know Your Rights trainings and documentation, sponsoring rallies, and other events. 7)Setting examples of peace and non violence when confronted by violence of authority. 8)Exploring alternatives to calling the police. 9)Work with existing community based efforts who resist police abuse AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT TO OBSERVE THE POLICE AND TO ADVOCATE FOR ONE ANOTHER.
