ALICE AUSTEN HOUSE & MUSEUM Born in 1866, Miss Austen is described as A rebel who broke away from the ties of her Victorian environment, creating her own independent life. I like her for that alone. But she was also one of Americas first female documentary photographers, and her work, which was done starting when she was just ten years old, is extraordinary. She was also a master tennis player, a landscape designer, contemporary of Matthew Brady (who lived on Staten Island for a time - who knew?), and the first woman on Staten Island to own her own car. If you have any interest in the history and/or art of photography, it is worth the trip to see the prints made from her thousands of glass negatives. But it is also just a nice place to visit: a beautiful house, built between 1691 and 1710 by a Dutch merchant, and garden with spectacular view of the harbor and bridge.
