ALL THE CRICKET BENALLA DISTRICT CRICKET ASSOCIATION Towners on top early against St Joseph’s (BE) Violet Town and Warrenbayne dominated in the Benalla and District Cricket Association’s Cleary Shield on Saturday, easily accounting for St Joseph’s and a depleted Benalla side. At Benalla’s Friendlies Oval, St Joseph’s hosted Violet Town, which was sent into bat after St Joseph’s won the toss. It was a decision that soon backfired as Towners’ skipper Rob Saker took strike for the first ball and went immediately on the attack. He racked up a quick-fire 40 runs before he was out in the ninth over with his team on top at 2/60. New recruits Troy Jones (27) and Ben Janissen (17) kept the pressure on the St Joseph’s bowlers with clever placement of the ball and brisk running between wickets. Youngster Nathan Abley batted confidently for his 19 runs and a cameo 17 from just six balls faced from Gary Abley iced the Towners’ innings, giving them a more-thancompetitive score of 5/141. Conor Brodie (1/21 off four overs) and Brendan Anderson (1/23 off four overs) were the pick of the bowlers. St Joseph’s needed a flying start and hoped Vijay Satyanarayana could deliver as he did last week. But he was well caught on the boundary by Nathan Abley for just four runs, shortly after fellow opener Harry Listed holed out for nine. This brought Sam Gladstone and Brendan Anderson to the crease and this pair kept the score ticking over, but clever field placement and consistent bowling kept the score in check. As the run rate rose, risks had to be taken, and Anderson (13) got bowled trying for the big shot, as did Steven Lister shortly after. The game was all but over with the required run rate out to nearly 15 an over. Gladstone finished with 38 in a solid display that will be more suited to the longer form of the game, and St Joseph’s finished its 20 overs on 8/114. Lee Brennan continued his good form with the ball taking 3/15 off his four overs, with Nathan Abley giving good support taking 2/10 off three overs. Warrenbayne compiles handy total From page 28 In the battle at Gardens Oval Warrenbayne batted first and compiling a handy total of 4/132. With only nine batsmen Benalla’s run chase was always going to be difficult, but skipper James Dalton gave his team some hope scoring 40. But Benalla was eventually all out for just 87. Jimmy Rahore took 3/7 cleaning up the tail, while Nick Brazil impressed with 2/12 off four overs. In the Trewin Shield games Merton, Euroa Juniors and Warrenbayne were victors.
