ALS, along with GB, MS, MD, and a hundred other things (some of which used to be called polio before the diagnostic criteria was changed, erm, I mean, until diagnostics became more accurate ) is caused by heavy metals in the environment. Studies showing an inconsistent correlation are more often than not based on self-reporting which is not in any way sufficient for determining environmental causation or lack thereof. Lead is a known risk factor.
