ALS ice water bucket challenge as per request of Brandon Robbins. My nominations are Nick Aukerman, Conner Worm, and Darryl Calhoun! In addition to completing the ice water challenge I also challenge everyone who has yet to donate to do so (as I will be doing) even if its the miniumum ($5). To donate: goo.gl/Tu21v6 I would also like to say that I am really inspired by this effort. This silly ice water bucket challenge is doing a far better job of spreading awareness for ALS than any other previous efforts. In a matter of a few weeks this challenge has raised over 60 million more dollars than the ALS Association saw in the same time period last year ($62.5 million compared to $2.4 million) and its not even finished. There is much potential in challenges like these that (or really anything that can) use the internet to garner this much awareness and cooperation from an international community. We should certainly pat ourselves on the back for such an accomplishment but I want to emphasize that we should not become complacent with this progress. Imagine what we could achieve if this challenge (or something like it) became a yearly thing with a new goal each year (thats certainly not to say that we are finished with ALS and can forget about it). Maybe next year there can be a challenge to raise awareness and spur donations for the lack of available clean water in sub Saharan African countries. Right now issues like these are being left to governments and philanthropic millionaires but I believe it is time that the average person steps up and lends them a hand. There arent many of us that have the capital to make much of a difference by ourselves but if everyone were to give a little bit, and we use all that money in a smart way, we could do great things. In todays fast pace world we cant fully rely on the slow bureaucratic processes of our government. If we want progress (and want it quick), we can and should vote with our dollars. Though I will admit that I have lately turned into somewhat of an optimist, I think it would be awesome if this became at least a yearly event to help tackle the most pressing issues we are facing.
