NBT WEBSITE: nbtindia.gov.in DEFENCE OF KHAP PANCHAYAT-MYTH AND REALITY The khap ideologues and activists defend the institution of the kahap panchayat on three grounds: first, the prampara(tradition) provides the basis of its sustenance and the same must be defended and perpetuated; secondly, khap has no role in honour crimes which are the handiwork of the parents and relatives of the deviant youth, and thirdly, it has played glorious role in history in defence of countrys honour and integrity and fought valiantly against injustice. The claims needs to be examined dispassionately....It is the ignorance of the symbiotic relationship between tradition and modernity which explains the rigidity of khap. Tradition untouched by modernity starts stinking and becomes a drag on society while modernity cut off from tradition is shallow and spurious. It is the harmonious blend of the two that takes society forward. This basic reality finds no place in the structure and functionaing of the khap panchayat.[Similarly other claims too along with the relevance of tradition have been examined in details in this chapter.]
