NBT WEBSITE:nbtindia.gov.in KHAP VERSUS KHAP Ajay Sinha, a Mumbai-based film maker , produced a film titled khap, with well know film actor, Om Puri in the lead. Sinha claimed that he got the idea of the film from Manoj-Babli murder in Haryana for their supposed crime of marrying against the marital norms of khap panchayats.... Before the film was to be released, various khap panchayats started denouncing it as a conspiracy to to defame the khap institution. A threat was conveyed to the cinema owners to show the film at their risk. The administration was a silent spectator.....a meeting attended by a large number of social activists, writers, academicians, theater personalities, etc. took place at Rohtak. In a hard hitting resolution, the culture of intolerance spawned by the khaps was denounced. Once a film was passed by the Censor Board, any attempt to to stop its screening was an attack on the right of free expression guaranteed under the Constitution of India...The threat of of khaqp unnerved the cinema owners and film was not screened anywhere.. ...khaps outsmarted Shiv Sainiks and Ram Sainiks in achieving their objective without indulging into violence. Their writ runs large in the khap land. Voltaire, whose ideas along with those of Rousseau triggered the French Revolution, observed while addressing his opponents My views are different from yours but I am prepared to die to uphold your right to independence of opinion. The khap activists are fostering the culture of intolerence. Still worse is the spineless conduct of Haryanas political masters.
