AN OPEN LETTER TO FUTASUG PRESIDENT. BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE - TopicsExpress

AN OPEN LETTER TO FUTASUG PRESIDENT. BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE Dear Comrade President, I write this as a futa student, a financial member of the union and as a concerned comrade. It has being almost half a year since your election as the unions numero-uno. We have seeing you handle various controversial issues among which I will highlight very few in which your stand was not made clear to the students as the President of the Union and as a result of this, very many futarians, including me, are gradually loosing confidence in you and your regime. Hence, the need for this advisory letter before it is too late. Taking you down memory lane, sometime towards the end of last semester, the 100level students were mandated to pay the sum of N500 to obtain a book named hostel ethics which was made to serve as a ticket for them to obtain school identity cards which they have already paid for in their exorbitant school fees. Has a responsible President and the head of government, you assured this innocent freshers that they will not pay that money since more than 65-70% of them were staying off campus. Why the need for hostel ethics on 100% of the freshers? The ever koni gbagba kugba freshers stood up en-mass and with you and other concerned comrades including me matched to the students affairs division to make known our grudges and demanded the relevance of such a book. The deputy vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Fashakin humbly addressed the protesting students and assured them they will get their ID cards without necessarily paying for the book. He gave an instant directory and all the freshers got their ID cards. We believed it was a won struggle. I was in a five minutes frozen tableau some days ago when I heard that all the 100l students eventually paid that N500 mandatorily and we heard nothing ever again from the SUG you are leading. The 100l students and other concerned comrades involved in that days struggle deserves an explanation from you and your failure to do so is resulting into your competency, honesty, character and integrity been questioned. Also, the issue of EMT302 offered by all 300l students is relevant to discuss here. Mr. President, if you can vividly remember, almost four years ago when EMT302 was first introduced, the students were required to pay N5,000 to acquire practical entrepreneurial skills and the then President, Late Com. Awopegba Julius was able to amicably beat the amount down to about N3,500 and yet they all learn and acquired practical skills as evident by my present haircut made for me by one of the beneficiaries of the scheme now in 500l. Today, we are doing this same program and we paid N4,500 and all we got was the history, life and time of tanterlizers, all in the name of entrepreneurial mentorship. We have acquired mentorship for almost 10 weeks out of 14 and then we are to acquire the core practical skills in just 2 to 3 weeks. I mean 2 to 3 days. Ideal? Mr. President, most students who believed they paid as high as N4,500 because they expected to acquire the practical skills on campus are now being posted to places as far as ondo road, oke ogba, alagbaka etc where some spent close to N300 per day as transportation fare. Some of these students agitated for the management to refund a part of the N4,500 back to them but before the management could say Jack Robinson in response, you were quick enough to inform the students the probability that we will get our money back is 0.0001. You quenched their hopes as immediately has it was given birth to and they now languish themselves in a bitter silence. Comrade President, these sets of students are momouring and they are loosing confidence in your leadership. They are watching just like I am watching. Something urgent must be done to correct this trend of gigantic errors that could lead our dear union into a catastrophe of monumental proportions before it is too late. Also, few weeks ago, I was opportune to travel to Asaba the Delta state capital as one of the supporters of an aspirant running for a post at the national convention of the national association of Nigerian students, NANS. Coincidentally, I was on the same convoy with you as team FUTA and we had three gallant comrades contesting for the same post only from our university. Upon arrival at the convention, before the outburst of chaos, we were welcome to asaba by two of the aspirants. On our way back to school, only one of the aspirants addressed us and bided us safe journey. You never told us a token of N8,000 was given to you for the refreshment of us all by one of the aspirants until it was leaked to us that you deliberately kept mute and planned to keep the money. When some guys tried to raise their voice, that was when we were now summoned and our share was given to us before the cat was let out of the bag. I condemn this act and advice you desist from such. Lastly, I want to draw your attention to the unfavourable rumour flying around of the purported increment of our school fees. For our case not to be a sorry case or similar to that of great-ife, I want you to make your findings and ascertain the authenticity of this rumour. If it is true, I know you are an ardent advocate of dialogue to resolve critical issues, I beseech you to begin with immediate alacrity to articulate your points, views and words to use when and if you find yourself on the negotiation table with the management before it is too late. Yours in struggle Com. Olugbade F.O Omoscow
