AN OPEN LETTER TO GOVERNOR BABATUNDE RAJI FASHOLA(S.A.N) THE LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS UNION(LASUSU) EX- LEADERS FORUM. The above named association deem it fit to inform you of our resolution to support the clarion call of Lagos State Univesity Students Union on the outrageous increment of the university tution fee,We hereby re-affirm our unflinching support and re-instate our loyalty for this just cause. We unequivocally support the stance of the students union vis-a-vis the reduction of the school fees to affordable standard of #46,500 and 65,000 for returning students and freshmen respectively. We wish to register our displeasure over the lingering LASU crisis,resulting to incessant closure of the university and disruption of its activities,thereby polluting the entire academic enviroment,both present and past students regrettably are subjected to discriminatory and derogatory treatment amidst the comity of academia. We fervently believe the university is not a revenue making organ of the government,but a social service due to be fundamental to the basis of governance and it core values,government must never contemplate any form of commercialization for education as it is her primary and statutory duty to invest in the future of her citizenry and to protect the present system from structural collapse which is imminent under this despotic system which has notably excluded the final year law students of the university admission into the Nigerian law school for the bar part 2 programme as a result of incessant grounding of academic activities,and if urgent measures are not taken to reduce the tution fee to the aforestated amount of #46,500 and #65,000 respectively,the consequence will be grave for all. The attendant effect of the current payment regime has led to the compulsory withdrawal of students who could hardly afford the outrageous fee initially,but paid through their noses and could not further on,in the light of this the student population has reduced drastically to the extent that the government itself must downsize its workforce at the university in commensurate proportion with the existing students population.It is noteworthy and wise to understand the reality on ground that the only logical way to go is to listen to the voice of reasoning as this will redound to the name of the government and party in power. This proposal will portray the government as sensitive and responsive if urgently implemented,doing otherwise will be counterproductive and will result to continuous mass peaceful protest. A word is enough for the wise.
