AN allegorical Short story Phantoms’ Fishing Rod After a whole days toil, I reached beside the vast lake of deep blue water extended to the horizon; as like as I stood beside the sea shore where I could see only earth, trees, bushes, various creatures, slums and cottages etc behind me. In front of me, lies only endless water playing its role with own new waves. The waves of the largest lake are tiny yet shining with setting Sunrays of pale red colour. I approached nearer to the lake and surprised to see numerous human skeletons as if those were sleeping facing their heads to the sky with out the spines, which lay apart beside the skeletons, those were a little far from one to another. These skeletons were scattered just a few yard far from the blue endless water. I was so surprised that I did not watch the sunset and the darkness advancing to devour the blue largest lake with its surroundings. Suddenly I saw the skeletons with out spine stood up and began to walk catching the spine in one hand; I became horripilate in fear as they all abruptly and unexpectedly were sitting near the water with all hazy and vague statures. They all were talking among themselves as if whispering which I took for sounds of air passing through the skeletons. I paid heed again, going forward to one of them; I wished to ask to satisfy my curiosity. It stood, came to me; putting one finger overall of mouth lifted its face to my face. I looked at its whole of eyes; I lost almost my sense, and then heard a nasal whisper: “Why are you here? You should know how to make fishing rod of own spine at first before coming here.” My mouth and tongue became dried up as if a dry cloth, in a trembling voice, I told, “I am apparently a man full of life and vivacity; not a skeleton like you, I need not a fishing rod made of own spine.” “Who comes in this large blue enchanting surrounding, he must be with us with all our features and tendencies.” “But you are all dead spirit; you should not have any desire or demand.” I said in trembling voice in fear. “No, we are all lively creatures with acute ambition and aspiration. We are to gain our satisfaction using our own spine as a fishing rod in this blue surrounding that we love for individual interest.” The skeleton said. He suddenly caught my hands, pulled me and sank me into endless blue water; I cried out in fear, but wandering into the water of the blue lake I felt there deferent types of fishes those were beyond to see and touch. I was floating in the water and on the surface of the blue water with that skeleton whose bony palm, fingers still then had caught my hand. I came out of the water after how many days I did not know and saw me as well as a skeleton like those dwellers beside the blue large lake. Thus I realised, all men come here will be skeletons with out their backbone in greed of having fishes by the fishing rod made of own spine to satisfy individual interest. Many skeletons came to congratulate me; it was an extreme terror to look at their bony faces, dreadful laughter and dark black wholes of eyes with out flesh, blood and skin. Yet they were active creatures in their world, thought to progress of the surrounding. Looking at the group of those phantoms, I told them, “Every creature is greedy, but none will separate their backbone for making any instrument for own satisfaction. Fish-eater becomes greedy on fish, so fish itself is an allegorical substance of greed. I felt the presence of fishes but I saw no fish—all were abstract.” One ugly skeleton explained, “Yes, we have named the different types of fishes for our prospect, happiness, to establish our personality— the names of the fishes are job, joy, reward, honour, promote, post, praise, power, peace in everything, wealth, wife, husband, lover, art, authority, creative power etc.” A dwarf bonny bony skeleton stopped him and began to say, “Who wants to bend their backbone without getting those items mentioned by my friend? Therefore, we dwell beside the endless blue water of this large lake from the unknown ancient age. We know our physical statures have become fragile and transitory. Yet we are happy.” I stopped him and asked, “How do you get the said fishes to your fishing rod as I know all are abstract and worldly state of mind and soul?” A very tall skeleton approached, horrified me with his loud laughter through his terrific ugly, kind of cave of mouth, after a few minutes it stopped. He lowered his face to me, said, “You are also with us, you must learn the tricks and techniques of baits which will help you in fishing. Baits bring fishes to pierce by fishing-hooks. Anybody comes here will be a skeleton with fishing rod made of his own spine. Don’t be afraid of being phantom like us.” I enquired of baits, “Why baits are necessary here as there is no matter of fishes? You are suggesting abstract fishes to indicate greed of human being.” A grey skeleton that was trembling continuous to advancing to me explained, “Yes, it’s a good question. But you know, to get some pleasurable we have to please one by adulation, tolerance, concealing anger-annoy-fatigue for superior boss, offering or accepting bribe; on the other hand, we have to suppress, discourage, blame and scandalize causelessly other praise-worthy persons for getting own pleasure. These are the baits for fishing.” He called a thin skeleton yet stylist with female-demeanour; she tried to smile on her mouth whole, said “Hi, glad to meet you.” At once, I recognized my first wife with her third husband who was my college-mate. I reciprocated with her saying, “Oh Honey! You are as beautiful as you were!” Just then, my second wife called me, “Where are you? Are you among these skeletons! I…I…I can’t recognize you.” She lost her sense and fell on the earth behind me. I lifted her on my bony lap. She regained her sense, looked at my face, and stood up. She suddenly threw herself into the endless blue water of the large lake. All the surrounding turned silent. Darkness retreated. Dawn advancing with the ashamed reddish rising sun to brighten up the surrounding.
