She was refering to the region around the Niger as Niger-area. 2. The late elder statesman, Chief ANTHONY ENAHORO on April 1st, 1953 moved a motion for the independence of Nigeria on the floor of the Western House of assembly. He is regarded by some academics as the father of Nigerias Independence. He remained active in Nigerias Politics until his death in 2010. Most recently,he was the chairman of National Democracy Coalition (NADECO), a pro-Democracy group that fought the Military Government of General Sani Abacha until Abachas death. 3. CALABAR was the capital of Southern Protectorate. After Lagos colony was amalgamated with the southern protectorate,the capital was then moved to Lagos in 1906 which continue to be the capital of Nigeria after the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates. On Dec 12,1993, the capital was moved from Lagos to Abuja where it is presently located. 4. After the Northern and Southern protectorates were amalgamated, EIGHT (8) colonial Governor Generals ruled the country until independence in 1960. Shehu Usman Danfodio was born in Maratta,Gobir in the year 1754. His parents migrated from the Futa Jallon mountains in Guinea along with many other people from the Fula tribe. He launched his Jihad in Hausa land in the year 1802. He got his inspiration from the Fulani Jihadist that establshed themselves in the Fouta Djallon, Futa Toro and Futa Bundu areas of Guinea. It is considered as the first indigenous Newspaper in Africa. It was was founded by a missionary,Rev Henry Townsend on November 23, 1859 and it was first published on December 3, 1859 in Abeokuta. It was a Bi-weekly paper in Yoruba language and later an English version was introduced which ran concurrently with the Yoruba version. A single edition had about 8 pages in total and was sold for 120 cowries(Yoruba version) while the English Edition cost a penny. The pages were usually divided into 2 columns. The Newspaper had no pictures due to insufficient technical equipment during the period. It ran for about Eight (8)years between 1859-1867 before an uprising in Abeokuta led to the destruction of the Newspaper printing equipment which grounded its production. 9a. HERBERT MACAULAY was the first man to buy a car in Nigeria. The first motor road in Nigeria was completed in 1905. 9b. Mrs OLUFUNMILAYO RANSOME-KUTI was the first woman to drive a car in Nigeria. ONYEBUCHI CHINYERE is the First female PILOT in Nigeria while Mrs WURAOLU ESAN is the first female SENATOR in NIGERIA. 10. EMMANUEL IFEJUNA was the first person to bring honour to Nigeria in an international sporting competition by winning Gold in VANCOUVER 54 Common Wealth Games in Canada with a 2.03 meters leap in the High Jump event, setting a new record in the process. The first female in Africa to win a Gold medal is CHIOMA AJUNWA of Nigeria. The Nigerian civil war lasted 2 years,6 months,1 week and 2 days. It started on July 6,1967 and ended in January 15,1970. About Three million lives were said to have been lost on both sides during the 30 months that the unfortunate war lasted. 12. On the 12th of January 1970 after Federal troops over ran Uli air strip,from where Ojukwu had left the day before, Gen Philip Effiong,Ojukwus assistant who took over after Ojukwu went on exile decleared a capitulation thereby putting an end to Nigerias bombardment of Biafra; and on Jan 15, 1970, Effiong formally surrender to Gen Yakubu Gowon in Lagos on behalf of the Biafrans while a certain Colonel(now General) Olusegun Obasanjo accepted the surrender instruments from Gen Effiong on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria. 13.CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKU son of millionaire transport-business tycoon, Sir Louis Odumegu Ojukwu was the first University graduate to join the Army. At age 13,from Kings college Lagos, his father sent him overseas to study in the United Kingdom,first at Epsom college and later at Lincoln college,Oxford University,where he earned a Masters degree in History. He returned to Nigeria in 1956 and joined the civil service in Eastern Nigeria as an Administrative officer at Udi in Enugu. In 1957,within months of working with the colonial civil service,he left and joined the millitary as one of the the first few University graduates to join the army,something that didnt go down well with his father Note* Lt. Col P Finnith was the first female officer in the Nigerian Army while Mrs Dupe Adelaja was the first female Minister of Defence in Africa. 13. Naira and Kobo were introduced on January 1,1973 as the legal tender in Nigeria. Before then POUND,PENCE and SHILLINGS have been the legal tender since 1945 and in the years before 1945,it was barter that was the standard and later cowries were used. 15. CRUDE OIL was first discovered in Nigeria in the year 1956 in OLOIBIRI in 0gbia LGA of Bayelsa. 16. The Aba women riot of 1929 was sparked by a widow who was simply known as NWAYEUREUWA. It was a war against corrupt Native warrant chiefs who exploit natives by over taxing them. The protest was initially a peaceful one but it escalated and blew out of proportion when three women were killed by authorities during a sit in protest on the road leading to the District Officers quarters. The women won a decisive victory and most of the corrupt warrant chiefs were forced to relinquish their position and the end of the war saw the inclusion of women in local politics. CURRENT AFFAIRS 17. Four Countries share Land borders with Nigeria. They are BENIN REPUBLIC in the West, CAMEROON AND CHAD in the East and NIGER in the NORTH. The Nigerian coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean.
