ANTI-CORRUPTION ARMY RISES AGAINST BINAY By Philip Jr Lustre Vice President Jejomar Binay could have wrongly thought that his public sorties would clear him of the allegations of corruption hurled by his political enemies. But the way the public has been reacting to those public campaigns, it is doubtful if Binay is getting the public support. On the contrary, he getting mired in more controversies. The cold reality is that the public has not expressed any public outrage over his accusers in the Senate. They are not in any way angry, mad, or indignant over the public posturings of his accusers, including the Mercado-Bondal tandem, and, of course, the Trillanes-Cayetano-Pimentel triumvirate of the Senate blue ribbon subcommittee. Such absence of public outrage should alarm Binay. The usual recourse is for the people to say that Binay has to appear to the Senate to explain and clear his name of any wrongdoing. So long as he refuses to go to the Senate, Binay has no chance of clearing himself – and redeeming his tarnished name. His name will remain soiled before the eyes of the people. Binay’s refusal to appear to the Senate and insistence to go to public places instead has been quietly meeting stiff opposition from his political enemies. In fact, they have been calling and holding simultaneously public meetings, symposiums, and convocations to discuss and explain corruption issues and the global anticorruption campaign. While Binay refuses to discuss corruption issues against him, his enemies have been attempting to create an anticorruption culture among the people. They take pains to explain that times have changed and that the anticorruption drive has been sweeping all the countries in the world, including the Philippines. They have been explaining the necessity of creating an anticorruption culture in the country. His enemies and the people they have convinced through those quiet public gatherings have become a sort of anticorruption army, whose job is to wage a total war against corruption in the many years to come. There is absolutely no way for Binay to get their support. On the contrary, these are the people who will erode his base of support in the runup for the 2015 presidential elections. Binay should see the handwriting on the wall. His public campaign is not getting the traction in national consciousness. He should not be jaded to understand that what the people want him to do is to appear before the Senate and explain his oath under oath. Talking empty words to the people in his public sorties, or issuing states through press releases in the mass media won’t help him at all. The best way to handle his precarious situation is to take the bull by its horns and say candidly his piece on all those accusations of corruption against him. He has to face them like a man. He can’t just brush them aside and tell the world that they are all lies. In fact, he is the one perceived as lying.
