#APC Chieftains To Meet Over Confab Participation The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would meet within the next few days to decide whether to participate in the proposed National Conference. This follows President Goodluck Jonathan’s Independence Day speech, which disclosed the readiness of his government to facilitate a national dialogue to discuss some burning national issues threatening the corporate existence of the country. To show his commitment, he set up a panel under the chairmanship of Senator Femi Okurounmu, a chieftain of Afenifere, to advise the government on the modalities for the discourse. But since then, the polity has been polarised over the confab; while some welcome it and give kudos to the Jonathan administration, not a few are cynical, describing it as deceitful and a diversionary tactic that was ill-timed. A national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, vehemently condemned the confab and cautioned the populace against accepting a deceitful Greek gift. Expressing concern that the next general election is 15 only months away, he, however, said he could not say if his party would participate or not. Already, the Jigawa State governor, who belongs to the new People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has said his state would not participate. Speaking with the spokesman of the APC, Lai Mohammed, he explained that Tinubu only expressed his personal view on the proposed confab and that the party’s leadership would meet to deliberate and decide on how to handle it. “Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not say APC would participate or not participate - he said the party would meet and decide on that. What I can tell you now is we have not yet met but we would meet as soon as possible and whatever is our decision would be made known to the public,” he said. #leadership
