APC Political Survival in Nigeria Hangs on a Balance My late grandmothers proverbial tapestry was such an asset to me that many years after her demise, her very words on different situations still guide my reflective appraisal of everyday phenomena. One of such words of hers was, Nwa mkpi na-aku mpi, ekwo ga adi ya aro (A young he goat that is thirsting for a horn locking duel should ensure that his neck cavity is matured enough). So true was this very words that non-cognisanse of it predispose one to self destructive venture. The late Igbo highlife music maestro, Oliver de Coque in one of his songs says Onye na amu iku okpo buru uzo kua akpa aja, okusia akpa aja o wee choba onye o ga-akugbu..... ( He who desires to be a boxer should train well with bags of sand before challenging any one to a boxing duel). Having carefully observed the recent political events in the country, I wish to break my silence again as a matter of neccesity. Not long before this time, the Nigeria political cynosure was built around policies and criticisms as well media assaults between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and the opposition party APC . It got so intensed that the presidency had most of its policies rubbished by APC on media even before they are communicated to Nigerians. As a matter of fact, APC marched the bold length of almost causing a still-birth to an executive bill brought before the national assembly by the presidency. Such was APC days of good outings. But With the controversial kidnapp of over 200 female students of Government Secondary School Chibok, by the murderous Boko Haram terrorist ground and subsequent bombings and bombardments by same terrorists, all scampered for safety and a new subject of attention (national security) was created. While blackmail and counter blackmail trailed the chibok saga, PDP machinery seem to quickly acknowledged the need to fall back to their political scheming armoury and dust up for APC a befitting clamp down weapon lest 2015 will see the end of the partys one and half decades years of power control in Nigeria. The political scheming that brought victory the way of PDP at the June 21st gubernatorial poll in Ekiti state was one that beat the imagination of APC stakeholders. The current situation in south west has awakened Nigerians to the consciousness of an advancing political hurricane such that swept off Alliance for Democracy (later AC, ACN and now APC) control in the south west Nigeria at the end of 2003. The caliber of candidates fielded by PDP in Ekiti and the yet to be held Osun polls reveals to every political mind, how much of a business PDP meant in south west politics. PDP has added to their weapon of assault, impeachement. While impeachement hovered over Nyako like the sword of Damocles which eventualled slayed him, it became evident how much APC has been pressed to a tight corner. In as much as it is clear to political observers and pundits that the ongoing impeachment wind is teleguided from the presidency, the presidency knows better that such notion by Nigerians is less logical than the evidential facts that the impeachable offences and allegations against the APC governors are in no way spurious. With Ekiti taken by PDP as well as Adamawa, APC is two man down in the game, this has emboldened PDP to advance toward Osun with confidence, while it perfect its plans to take over Nasarawa. Interestingly, the heat seem to be gathering in Edo and Imo where the both houses of assembly have members from two sides of the divide. The cold war between Fashola and Tinubu over the choice of next Lagos state governor has added more headeache to the opposition party this is not without stating the schocking assasination attempt on APC leader, Gen.Muhammed Buhari (Rtd). The political heat in APC household has got tense that the stakeholders seem overwhelmed by it. Lai mohammed has lost his loquacious vibrancy while Oyegun has resorted to name calling that is in no way new to the ruling party. Going by the barrage of problems against the opposition party, each APC state has to manage the heat in its own domain as there is hardly chance for the party to restrategise to launch a reprisal as a common front only if the party wins Osun poll to buy few time of respite. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that PDP will keep the tempo of advancement into the opposition stronghold. Thus, it behooves on APC state governors to find in their house of assembly members, the hottest political brides . If they show themselves unfit to keep the brides, PDP is willing to pay double bride price . APC survival is hanging on a balance ipso facto. Celestine Chidozie Kezie Writes from Ibadan.
