APOSTOLIC CORNER THE ELEMENTS OF DISCIPLESHIP Element #2 PRAYER. A disciple is not an historian. He has more than an interest in an era or a person of the past. He is in touch with a living, personal power in the present, and nothing accents this fact more than prayer. We cannot condense such a vast subject into a few short paragraphs. In terms of discipleship let us only note the following: • Prayer is service. “Men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1). • Prayer is strengthening. “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). • Prayer is to be learned. “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). • Prayer is spiritual exercise. “For we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). • Prayer is the means of spiritual progress. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you” (Matthew 7:7). Prayer lies at the heart of a disciple’s relationship with God. It is the only way for true communion to exist between earth and heaven. The Christian must set aside time for prayer. He must expend effort in it, achieve his objectives through it, fight Satan by it, and derive growth from it. It is the keystone to the arch of discipleship.
