APRIL 4, 1960: Elizabeth Taylor, 28, and husband, Eddie Fisher, 32, attending the 33rd Annual Academy Award Ceremony in Los Angeles. Elizabeth was nominated for Best Actress for her performance in Suddenly, Last Summer. It was her third consecutive Best Actress nomination but wasnt opportunistic about winning as Katherine Hepburn was (also) up for the award in the same category for the same film. Taylor believed that they would cancel each other out. She and Fisher had arrived in Los Angeles from New York City, where she was currently filming her last MGM contractual movie, Butterfield Eight, earlier that day to clear out her MGM dressing room trailer. After17 years of what she called slave labor, she was finally free of the tyrannical studio and anticipated making Cleopatra, for a cool million dollars, in the fall. As for the stability of her year old marriage, it was wobbly at best.
