AREA-Aerovias Ecuatorianas was estabilished on November 11, 1948. Scheduled operations were started in the following February with Boeing 307. Strong competition from US-supported PANAGRA forced the airline to suspend operations in mid 50s. AREA revived on July 9, 1959, when it started again domestic schedules with a FH.27 and DC 3s. In the following years DC 4s and DC 7s joined the fleet allowing to fly up to Miami. In 1966 the air carrier introduced a single Comet 4 but competion with Ecuatoriana de Aviacion grew and the jetliner was impounded. It was quickly replaced by a Convair 990 but the airline finances were already in bad shape and at the end of 1968 it went into receivership. I got this print directly from AREA: it is not a true postcard as the back side is all-white. Indeed it is very very rare....
