ASUP strike: Students set for showdown, blame Wike for crisis Students, under the aegis of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS, have decided to storm the Federal Ministry of Education and the Presidential Villa in Abuja, on Monday, July 7, to protest what they described as the unwarranted delay in the resolution of the crisis between the polytechnic lecturers and the Federal Government. The students, who blamed the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike for the plight of the polytechnics and colleges of education students, also accused the Minister of intentionally boycotting the meeting called by the Education Committee of the Senate to intervene in the impasse. In a press statement issued yesterday by the Senate President of the association, Salawudeen Lukman, the students insisted that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan was not interested in the future of the younger generation, saying, “how could a reasonable government leave students to wander about for more than 10 months without resolving the issues warranting such?” The statement read in part: “It is obvious that this Government has no respect for the future and the career development of Nigerian youths. It is so pathetic to see that the stakeholders’ meeting called by the Senate Committee on Education to enable Nigerian students return to their classrooms after completely losing a whole academic session suffered another setback on Monday following the insensitivity, ineffectiveness and unpatriotic posture of the Education Minister who for the second time in less than two weeks boycotted the rescheduled meeting for no just cause. “It is on this note that we say no to the deliberate act of the Federal Government to ruin our lives, since none of their children attend public polytechnics or colleges of education. We have, therefore, resolved to take our cry to President Goodluck Jonathan and hear from him directly what our fate is in his self-acclaimed transformation agenda. We enjoin all concerned stakeholders to join us as we move en mass.”
